Babel No16 – A Saussure Special!
Babel No16 is here, just in time for your summer holiday reading!
The August issue’s cover star, Ferdinand de Saussure, is the subject of our first ever special issue. 2016 marks the centenary of the publication of Saussure’s Cours de Linguistique Generale, widely regarded as one of the founding texts in lingusitics. To mark the anniversary, our new issue features three special articles on the life and works of the Swiss linguist and semiotician: Hillary Waterman looks at Saussure’s work on the relationship between signs, meaning and language, William J. Carrasco discusses the recent discovery of previously unpublished works, and Javier Alcalde explores the influence of Ferdinand’s brother, Rene, on his ideas. Our colourful pull-out poster also discusses some of de Saussure’s key ideas and their continuing influence, paying special attention to how they can teach meaning to computers!
Swot up on Saussure with Babel No7’s Lives in Language feature!
Elsewhere in the new issue, Sali A. Tagliamonte explains her novel approach to uncovering the history of an academic discipline and how interviews with eminent linguists helped her to piece together the history of variationist sociolinguistics, while Malcolm Hebron discusses an issue central to the language of the news today – the implications of the words ‘migrant’ and ‘refugee’ when describing someone leaving their home. Our sixteenth issue also features all the usual articles: Languages of the World profiles Chinese, we meet a linguistic tour-guide in Meet the Professionals, and Lives in Language profiles linguist and literary scholar Leo Spitzer.
Finally, many thanks once again to all who attended the 2016 Babel Lecture at the University of Huddersfield in May. The night was a great success, with David Crystal, our very own Lingusitic Consultant, providing a hugely informative and entertaining talk on the English tone of voice. Babel No16 contains a commemorative review of the evening, and you can also now enjoy the evening's curtain-raiser - Babel Editor Dan McIntyre's animated story of Babel magazine – on YouTube!
Keep your eyes peeled for news of the next Babel lecture in 2017!
