First things first, what is a MOOC we hear you ask...
Well, ‘MOOC’ stands for Massive Open Online Course and Leiden University is launching its first linguistics course of this kind on March 30th 2015. The course is titled ‘Miracles of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics’, lasts five weeks, and is FREELY available worldwide.
The course will be delivered by Professor Marc van Oostendorp and will feature interviews with world-renowned linguistics such as Noam Chomsky. The course content will cover a range of linguistic topics from the building blocks of language such as sounds and morphology, to the role of language in society. The course aims to widen participants’ knowledge about their native tongue through an exploration of their own and other languages. Participants on the course will follow 5 weeks of video lectures, weekly quizzes and a final exam where they will apply the knowledge gained from the lessons and the freely downloadable reading materials.
The course will provide an overview of the field of linguistics using basic terminology, so no specific linguistics background is required. The course is advertised for people with an interest in language study, so come on Babelers!
