Babel Issue 6
The first Babel of 2014 is now out! Issue 6 is arriving on subscribers' doormats right now, and is also the first issue of Babel to be released in a digital format that you can read on your computer or mobile phone – a brand new format for the new year. If you have not yet subscribed and would like to do so, find out how on the Subscribe to Babel section of the site.
Issue 6 is packed with articles covering a wide variety of language subjects. Language and politics matters are discussed in articles on press coverage of British trade unions and the relationship between globalisation and language competence in the US, while there are also fascinating insights into the linguistic skills of female rappers and the complexities of raising bilingual children.
Babel's very own Linguistic Consultant, Prof David Crystal, also makes an appearance in an interview about his and Hilary Crystal's new book Wordsmiths and Warriors: An English-Language Tourist's Guide to Britain.
You'll also find our regular features on language in the news, the linguistic lexicon and reviews of the latest books on language. There's also a challenging quiz on word origins for budding etymologists, as well as our pull-out poster – this month's edition colourfully demonstrates how the words that make up the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary can be categorised according to their meaning.
So, all in all, plenty to keep language lovers happy!
